Their dad vanished 22 years ago. Now his Bronco is crashed into the cabin and Mira's sister is gone.
A missing sister. A frozen town. And the ghost of a twenty-two-year-old cold case crashed straight through the living room wall.
The remote ski town of Cedarpoint, Idaho, is enduring the coldest winter on record. Coffee shop owner Mira Hawkshaw is melting down in private. Sarcastic, razor-sharp, and fiercely independent, Mira is surviving a divorce from the local Chief of Police by drinking too much, sleeping with the wrong people, and letting her dangerous edges show. One of the finest hunters in Compass County, she’s been turning those instincts on herself lately.
Then her older sister, Sarah—a devoted hospice nurse and the town’s resident saint—vanishes into the biting cold.
The police are left baffled by the only clue left behind: a red ’94 Bronco deliberately wrecked inside their family cabin. It’s an impossible calling card. It’s the exact same make, model, and year of the vehicle their father drove into oblivion when he abandoned the family twenty-two years ago.
In a small town built on old lies and deep-seated shame, local gossip says her father fled the country. Mira’s instincts tell her something far more sinister is buried in the woods.
Unable to trust the compromised local police—and with her soon-to-be ex-husband tracking her every move—Mira launches her own hunt into the frozen wilderness.
The deeper she digs, the more she realizes that whatever claimed her father might have come back for her sister. And if Mira can't discover what happened, she’ll be the next one to join the ghosts.
Unflinching and dripping with atmospheric tension, Ghosts in the Pines is a gritty Pacific Northwest Gothic noir perfect for fans of Tana French’s sharp character psychology, S.A. Cosby’s visceral prose, and C.J. Box’s wilderness suspense.
