Reluctant new tax avatar out of his depth in Georgian London.
Levi Matthews just started up as the new Avatar of Tax. Which is a surprise, because he didn’t know that was a thing. All the divorced gambler wanted to do today was take his daughter’s cat to the vet and then maybe win some money to pay for her wedding dress. Instead, he’s joined the crew of the time-travelling Tax Haven, he’s missed his briefing, and he’s fallen into 1799 on the back of a donkey. Oh, and he’s lost the cat.
His mission’s simple: just collect a specific hat tax. That’d be from James Hadfield. You know, the fellow who’s planning to kill King George. Not only does Levi spectacularly fail to tax him, but his accidental meddling means that the assassin might now actually succeed.
At least he’s not all alone as he scrambles to save the King, tax the assassin, and retrieve the cat before the time window closes. He’s got his new-found colleagues: Joyce, the animal keeper with a secret; Crawcus, the six-foot crow mechanic; a matronly Babbage Engine named Celia; and a host more besides.
It’s all going to go wrong. And then, if he’s super lucky, it’ll come right.
