You were forgiven. The consequences stayed. Now what?

The church knows what to say to the sinner: repent, and be forgiven. It knows what to say to the sufferer: God is near. It has almost nothing to say to the person who is both.

Michael Whitworth was that person. In 2021, a sin he had hidden for twenty-two years cost him his marriage and his ministry. He went from preaching on Sunday to cutting lawns in Texas, and for a year he believed his life was over.

It was not. But neither was it fixed.

Guilt is a legal problem, and the cross solves it completely. Regret is a history problem, and the cross does not reach back and unmake what happened. Drawing on David, Peter, and John Mark, Nevertheless tells the truth about what forgiveness does, what it does not do, and what God makes of the people who have to live in between.

Author

Michael Whitworth is the author of over forty books and commentaries exploring the depth and wonder of Scripture. A graduate of Freed-Hardeman University, he preaches for the Newport Avenue Church of Christ in Bend, Oregon. When he isn’t writing, he finds joy in simple things—reading a good book, capturing landscapes through his camera lens, or guzzling coffee (with a jar of M&Ms close by).
