A Fantastical Road-Trip Romance Inspired by The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
GABE:
I’m known as the “Tin Player of Texas Hold’em.” My playing style is cool and no-nonsense—robotic. The swells of muscle under the classic rock tees I wear and the sunglasses I never take off are reminiscent of a certain movie franchise featuring a metallic man and starring a pumped-up action star. But the real reason for the poker persona is to hide a secret straight from the pages of a comic book: I have x-ray vision.
Using my impossible eyes to win last year’s championship, I hoped to fill the hollow ache in my chest left by the unknowns in my life. I was abandoned at a church as a baby, and while I was raised by two loving fathers, my special eyes compounded my curiosity about my birth parents and kept me cautious, always worried about scrutiny and ridicule if my ability were revealed.
But after having all eyes on me for almost a year, the questions and emptiness remain. That is until a beautiful reporter with tarot cards and clairvoyance offers me a chance to find answers. We have a lot in common—able to see the world in unique ways and at a crossroads in life—and my chest doesn’t feel so hollow anymore.
GAIL:
Grief has left me unbearably lonely. My Koreatown apartment doesn’t feel like a home after the death of my mother—my only family and the one person who shared my psychic gifts. Needing purpose to deal with the pain, my tarot cards lead me to the handsome poker player with a literally penetrating gaze.
Accompanied by my little dog, Gabe and I go on a cross-country trip to the upcoming Las Vegas tournament to investigate the mystery of individuals like us. It’s a golden road of discovery, gaining wisdom and new perspectives from the gifted people we encounter.
