Under a brutal dictatorship known as the Authority, boys are worth only the labor they can provide. Alec works twelve hours a day, six days a week, setting explosives in a mine. He is seven years old. Other boys call him a stormrider, a curse to the community.
Abused at home and bullied at work, Alec seeks refuge in the Forbidden City where evil is said to dwell. There, he meets a mysterious being, an ancient machine intelligence known as the Librarian, who provides him with outlawed technology and dangerous knowledge.
The Authority arrests Alec’s family and he barely escapes, first to the street gangs of Rugged City, then becoming a child soldier for a vicious drug cartel. Forced to kill, caught between oppression and violence, he awakens to the true evil of his world.
Alec must become the Stormrider his world needs.
