Magic has no real weight, but it felt to Ku like it's a great weight sitting right on her shoulders.
Everybody thought persistent magic was a myth. Then Ku Tementen, a slave woman, arrived in Darmis, the imperial capital, to study magic. Shensta, her teacher, immediately recognized her abilities, but tried to keep them hidden until he could arrange her freedom. When she entered Vur's Competition, and not only won first place, but was awarded the honorific Borfutukeshti (Grand Magician) by the emperor himself, that wasn't easy. Then, when her master came to retrieve her, she fled to her homeland, and the emperor's personal magician followed her with instructions to either capture her or kill her. Instead, he ended up her prisoner, as she led a slave uprising, hoping her powers would be strong enough to defeat the most powerful army in the world.
