Toby still waits by the door for someone who isn’t coming home.
Since losing her mother, Hannah has learned how to keep going. She opens her gift shop every morning, fills her days with work, and does her best not to think about the empty place her mother left behind.
But grief has a way of waiting. So does Toby, her mother’s little pug.
Then Adam walks into Hannah’s shop and, before she knows it, into her carefully ordered life.
Adam owns a local outdoor adventure company, but much of his free time is spent helping people who have nowhere else to turn. With his golden retriever, Patience, at his side, he visits hospital patients and helps care for their pets until they can come home again.
Hannah tells herself she doesn’t need another responsibility. She doesn’t need to get involved.
And she certainly doesn’t need to become attached to a gentle golden retriever who seems to understand things Hannah hasn’t been able to say out loud.
But as Christmas settles over Leavenworth and the little Bavarian village glows beneath thousands of lights, Hannah begins to wonder if she’s been so busy holding on to what she lost that she’s forgotten how to make room for what might come next.
And sometimes the smallest step forward begins with four paws, a patient heart, and the courage to finally let yourself grieve.
The Gift of Patience is a heartwarming Christmas story about love, loss, second chances, and the remarkable way animals can help us find our way home.
