Will she choose a happy ending or a perfect life?
In 2019, Claire’s life is a careful compromise. She’s put aside her first love and her passion for music in favor of a stable marriage and career. Now, she and her husband, Paul, are trying to start a family.
Then Claire’s brother announces his girlfriend is pregnant—by accident, because everything comes easily to them—and they’re getting married. As wedding preparations throw Claire back into her old boyfriend’s orbit, her uneasiness with her choices rises. Claire edges dangerously close to an affair, only to discover that her best friend, herself jealous of Claire’s settled life, has drawn Paul into an entanglement of his own. Even after Claire finally becomes pregnant and she and Paul recommit to their relationship, she is haunted by the lost friendship and the fissures in her marriage.
By 2020, all of Claire’s compromises have failed. Pregnant and alone, she longs for both the romance of her first love and the companionship of her marriage. But with her due date looming and the COVID pandemic beginning to spread, she has to choose between a happy ending and her perfect life.
