Eli Mason is a polite, reserved 11-year-old boy, who might just be a chess genius. The newspapers call him a prodigy. His rivals call him a cheat. Private detective Thomas Reeve is hired to find out the truth, and potentially destroy Eli’s career.
Posing as a novelist, Reeve begins attending chess championships, entering a world driven by fragile egos, overprotective parents and sore losers. He starts to get to know Eli and his devoted father Harry, and likes them. He realises he doesn’t really care whether they are cheating.
But when the mystery takes a deadly turn, the police demand answers. And Reeve must decide how far he will go to protect Eli.
