I have been fortunate to travel widely on business and pleasure while living in the United States and Canada and for six months in each of Ireland and Spain. Human motivation, ambition, and interpersonal conflict have always intrigued me and inspired my passion for writing fiction. After selling my business interests, I have pursued this passion.
The initial objective of this book was to be a modern-day version of one of my favorite books, Dr. Zhivago, by Boris Pasternak. However, as the characters developed and the story advanced, the novel took on a life of its own and strayed from the story of Dr. Zhivago. But Ethan’s moral flaws, Emma’ weaknesses and strengths, Laura’s ambitions, and the evil of Victor Kamarov do reflect characters from Pasternak’s novel. As I wrote, the personalities of Emma and Laura became more interesting to me and so, rather than focusing on Ethan, the book is more about the struggles of the two women.
I feel that another element of the book, global warming, is a very important topic and it should be on everyone’s mind. Also, it provides an excellent background to stir up conflict.
